Minnesota Walleye fishing
Over 40,000 acres, 1,200 miles of shoreline and 365 islands make Vermilion a
fisherman's paradise. Long renowned as one of Minnesota's best walleye pike
fishing lakes--now it may be THE best. The Minneapolis Star Tribune picked
Lake Vermilion as the number one early season walleye lake in Minnesota in
1999. Today there are even more walleye in Vermilion. In 1999 there were
16.8 walleye per DNR test net. In 2001 there were 18.2 walleye per net.
Compare that to a long term mean of 13.4 fish for Vermilion or 6.3 fish for
class II lakes in Minnesota. (Class II is the classification for the large
Canadian shield lakes of Northern Minnesota, lakes like Vermilion.)
Vermilion is currently benefiting from very strong walleye year classes from
1995, 97, 98, and soon from 2001. The 95 to 98 fish will be our bread and
butter in 2002 they will range from 12 to 21 inches in 2002. There is also
a good possibility of a much larger fish from an earlier year class. Please
remember to release those big fish. They are all females and they are
responsible for much of the natural reproduction in Vermilion.
This should be another great year for walleye fishing at Pehrson Lodge
